Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to upgrade a series of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which operate penstocks controlling movement of ships between the sea and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A series of A-range actuators had reached the tip of their operational life after long service in a challenging surroundings. BAE Systems wished to retain all the advantages of electrical actuators, so IQ3 actuators had been chosen. These needed to be specifically tailored by Rotork to overcome issues around confined spaces and troublesome entry.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes were mechanically adapted so that each actuator and gearbox could possibly be manually operated without entering the confined space. diaphragm seal designed special hand auto levers and thru drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to remove the necessity for confined house access.
Actuators inside the IQ range are watertight, providing ingress safety to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have an advanced dual stacked show with configurable information logger performance, and an absolute position sensor offers reliability and accuracy.
